🚀 Crypto Basics Series #37: What Are Blockchain Confirmations?
📌 What Is a Confirmation?
A blockchain confirmation means your transaction has been included in a block that has been added to the blockchain.
As additional blocks are added after that block, your transaction receives more confirmations.
🔗 Simple Example
Transaction → Block 1 → Block 2 → Block 3 → Block 4
If your transaction is included in Block 1:
Block 1 = 1 confirmation
Block 2 = 2 confirmations
Block 3 = 3 confirmations
Block 4 = 4 confirmations
More confirmations generally mean the transaction is increasingly difficult to reverse, although the exact security model depends on the blockchain.
🟡 Pending vs 🟢 Confirmed
🟡 Pending:
The transaction has been broadcast but hasn't yet been included in a block.
🟢 Confirmed:
The transaction has been included in a block.
🔒 More confirmations:
Additional blocks have been added after the transaction's block.
⚠️ Important
Different blockchains and services may require different numbers of confirmations before considering a deposit final.
Always check the requirements of the specific network or exchange you're using.
💡 Beginner Tip
Don't panic if a transaction isn't confirmed immediately.
Network congestion, fees, and blockchain-specific rules can affect how quickly a transaction is processed.
