MSCI vs. Strategy: the Nov 11 date every $BTC treasury holder should circle
MSCI confirmed on Oct 15 that "non-operating companies" will be ineligible for its Global Investable Market Indexes. Firms that fail an operating-asset screen and get flagged on 4 of 5 financial ratios are out. The final list lands Nov 11, and removals take effect at the close of Nov 30.
Strategy (MSTR) and Metaplanet were on the preliminary deletion list. SharpLink and several other treasury firms sit on a watchlist. On X, traders are debating how hard this hits: one widely shared post noted MSTR's mNAV sliding from about 1.9 to 1.16 in a single week.
My take: the headline is louder than the flow. Strategy itself says MSCI-tracking funds hold roughly 13M shares, about 3.1% of its basic shares and less than one day of trading volume. There's also a buffer: existing constituents are removed only if they fail the screen in each of their two most recent annual filing periods, so the timing of any actual exit is still uncertain.
What I'm watching:
- The Nov 11 list itself
- Whether MSTR's premium to its BTC holdings keeps compressing
- How $BTC holds the $80K zone into the Fed decision this week
A shrinking premium limits how fast treasury companies can raise capital to buy more BTC. That's the real second-order effect, not one day of index selling.
