While everyone stared at the $ETH chart this weekend, Vitalik Buterin quietly rewrote Ethereum's roadmap.
In a post published October 18, he said the vision of L2s as Ethereum's "branded shards" no longer makes sense — because Ethereum itself is now scaling directly on layer 1, and L2s have been too slow to reach maturity. That is the founder telling you the playbook changed.
Here is the tension: the upgrade proving him right is already shipping, and almost nobody is pricing it in.
The countdown is real
Glamsterdam activated on Sepolia on October 6. Next: Hoodi on October 26 at 17:42 UTC — the final testnet before mainnet. Headliners: enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists, plus a gas-limit test up to 200M from about 60M today.
Caveats: 200M is an opt-in test target, not an automatic mainnet setting, and mainnet has no confirmed date — just a Q4 target. Sepolia ran clean, but testnet success is not a mainnet guarantee.
Meanwhile, the ratio is whispering
$ETH trades near $2,416. The ETH/BTC ratio sits near 0.0295 — below the 0.030 line it held in September, down from 0.0325 on October 1. Not cycle lows (the May low was 0.027), but the direction is clear: capital still chooses Bitcoin first.
Pull up the $ETH chart against $BTC and you will see the setup. A reclaim of 0.0325 would be the first real sign of rotation back into ETH. A loss of the recent 0.0292 area opens the door to more Bitcoin dominance. This is the number that decides whether the upgrade story becomes a price story.
L2s are not dead — they are being rewritten
If L1 is doing more of the scaling, why is Ronin migrating to become an Ethereum L2 on Tuesday October 20? Because winning L2s are no longer "cheap Ethereum" — they are specialised chains borrowing Ethereum security. Ronin moves to the OP Stack, uses EigenDA, and cuts inflation from over 20% to under 1%.
That is consolidation, not a boom. Base leads L2s at about $6.2B in TVL, while Blast winds down and Abstract closes in December. $OP is the one to watch here, because Ronin is building on its stack.
The honest counterweight
The bleeding has not stopped. US spot ETH ETFs lost about $320M in the week to October 16, taking October outflows to roughly $955M. L1 fee revenue fell 69% in the first half of 2026.
But exchange supply is down about 30% year over year, and one whale rotated roughly $132M from BTC into ETH this week. Conviction and flows point in opposite directions.
What I am watching
Hold $2,400, and ETH gets another shot at $2,500, then $2,575. Lose it, and $2,313 is next. On October 26, watch Hoodi: a clean activation plus a ratio reclaim of 0.0325 would be the first time this month the tech story and the money story agree.
Not financial advice. DYOR.
