The whole crypto world has been talking about quantum computing lately. Many projects are still just telling stories, but NEAR has already started upgrading.

According to the upgrade announcement, NEAR Mainnet version 2.13 introduces the post-quantum signature algorithm ML-DSA-65, a NIST-standardized solution.

Users don’t need to change wallet addresses or transfer their assets around. They can gradually upgrade their account keys to post-quantum signatures.

That’s actually very important.

Just imagine: if quantum computing really threatens today’s encryption algorithms in the future, tens of millions of users would have to create new wallets and migrate their assets. What a hassle that would be!

NEAR’s account design at least provides a more flexible upgrade path.

Of course, the entire network hasn’t yet been upgraded to be post-quantum secure. There’s still work to be done on things like validator keys.

But I think the future competition between public blockchains may not just be about TPS, fees, and ecosystem size. It’ll also be about which ones can stay secure into the next technological era.

Projects used to go on and on about being the next-generation blockchain. Now the next generation’s real test may have arrived. 😂
