Rollups are currently the most popular Layer 2 solution, and are divided into two types: Optimistic Rollups and ZK Rollups. In March 2024, Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade introduced blob data (EIP-4844), significantly reducing the cost of submitting data from Layer 2 to mainnet.
Layer 2 security relies to a large extent on Ethereum mainnet: data and results ultimately need to be settled on mainnet. This is the main difference between Layer 2 and sidechains.
