The Visa executive noted that the integration of traditional payment cards with cryptocurrency exchanges plays an important role in the adoption of digital assets. Visa's head of innovation and design, Akshay Chopra, emphasized that Visa cards have served as a bridge between fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies in recent years. In 2021, Visa partnered with 75 major cryptocurrency exchanges, allowing them to issue Visa cards.
This provided access to a network of approximately 80 million Visa merchants who can serve customers who choose to use cryptocurrencies as a payment method. “Just by building this bridge in 2021, we have facilitated $3 billion in payment volume, although these figures have not yet been announced,” Chopra said.
Chopra highlighted one such opportunity for traditional financial institutions to enter the broader Web3 ecosystem. Settlement of payments between financial institutions offers another avenue for innovation and change with blockchain-based solutions. Chopra noted that existing protocols such as the SWIFT payment system still have limitations.
In April 2023, Visa launched a crypto product roadmap to encourage the adoption of stablecoin and public blockchain payments by mainstream financial institutions. The company also plans to invest $100 million to develop innovative AI-powered products and solutions in payments and commerce through Visa Ventures.
