Sometimes, an economic figure reveals more about how people feel than a thousand market headlines.
The University of Michigan’s preliminary November Consumer Expectations Index rose to 50.9, up from 48.8 in October, and exceeded the forecast of 49.0.
This index measures how Americans view their personal finances and the economy going forward. The improvement suggests that households are becoming a little less pessimistic.
But there’s another side to the story. Around 57% of consumers continued to spontaneously mention that high prices had hurt their standard of living. It’s a reminder that greater confidence doesn’t necessarily mean things are more affordable.
One encouraging sign: inflation expectations for the coming year fell from 4.7% to 4.3%, while long-term expectations edged down from 3.5% to 3.4%.
My take: the figure is improving, but the economy hasn’t suddenly become easier for ordinary households to manage. The real test will be whether lower inflation expectations translate into increased spending and sustained confidence.
For those trading crypto, it’s worth keeping a close eye on Treasury yields, the U.S. dollar, Fed expectations, and liquidity. Consumer confidence alone can’t guarantee a Bitcoin rally.
A more favorable outlook is encouraging, but what matters most is that purchasing power holds up.
Is this the beginning of a genuine recovery in confidence?
