【SEC’s new crypto rules: comment period ends; industry wants clarity, opponents want a full withdrawal】
The public comment period for the U.S. SEC’s proposed “Reg Crypto” rules ended on October 20, but the SEC says it will continue accepting comments after the deadline.
📌 Key points: Eligible projects could be exempt from registration when raising funds (up to $5 million over four years, or up to $75 million per year), and the proposal includes a conditional “safe harbor.”
📌 Bitwise: Wants clarity on whether a token is a security based solely on publicly available information.
📌 Hyperliquid Policy Center: Calls for a broader safe harbor and clearer rules for airdrops, token buybacks, and on-chain secondary trading/DEXs.
📌 Former SEC enforcement official John Reed Stark and Duke University’s Lee Reiners: Recommend withdrawing the proposal in its entirety, arguing that it could weaken investor protections.
Next, the SEC will decide whether to revise, adopt, or withdraw the proposal. Any final rules will also require a commission vote.
Do you think clearer regulations would benefit on-chain projects like
$HYPE and
$BTC , or put them in a straitjacket? Share your thoughts in the comments 👇
