Tesla’s new Roadster isn’t a true flying car — it’s an ultra-light supercar with SpaceX-style cold-gas thrusters for short bursts of flight, flips, and sub-second acceleration.
How it works:
Ultra-high-pressure compressed air (about 10,000 psi) is stored in carbon-fiber-wrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) distributed throughout the car, with a total capacity of about 250 kg/600 liters. The gas is expelled at high speed through about 10 nozzles. There is no combustion; thrust is generated purely by Newton’s third law. The thrust acts directly on the car body, bypassing the limits of tire grip (officially claimed to be 4–5 times tire grip). An onboard compressor can automatically replenish the air while driving.
