On Aug 26, StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy's team mined the first quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction on mainnet โ in block 964,199. No soft fork. No hard fork. No protocol upgrade. It just worked, using Bitcoin's existing rules.
๐น Method: "QSB" (Quantum Safe Bitcoin) โ swaps elliptic-curve exposure for hash-based signature grinding
๐น Security: ~118-bit resistance against Shor's algorithm (the quantum attack that threatens BTC keys)
๐น Moved: 10,000 sats, sent directly to a miner via MARA's Slipstream service since normal nodes won't relay the nonstandard format
๐น Cost: ~$150-200 and hours of GPU time โ not cheap, not mainstream-ready yet
๐น Stakes: Coinbase's quantum advisory council estimates ~7 million BTC is currently exposed through reused or revealed public keys
This isn't "Bitcoin is quantum-safe now." It's proof a real defense exists before quantum computers are actually a threat โ and StarkWare's own CEO is using this moment to push harder for a proper protocol-level soft fork (BIP-360).
