This week a US federal court sentenced Liu Zhou, founder of crypto market maker MyTrade. He sold fake trading volume to crypto projects for years. His punishment was a $10,000 fine.
Most traders have never had this explained properly. So let's break it down.
🔰 WHAT WASH TRADING ACTUALLY IS:
Wash trading is when the same person (or coordinated group) buys and sells the same asset repeatedly, with themselves.
No ownership actually changes hands. There is no real buyer and no real seller. But the exchange records it as a trade, and the volume number on the chart goes up.
Think of it like two hands of the same person passing a coin back and forth in front of a crowd. To the crowd, it looks like a busy market. Nothing is really being traded.
It has been illegal in traditional finance for nearly a century. In crypto, it ran openly for years.
🔰 WHY PROJECTS PAY FOR IT:
Four reasons, and every one of them hurts retail:
1️⃣ Exchange listings:
Many exchanges rank and list tokens partly by volume. Fake volume = better ranking = more visibility.
2️⃣ Aggregator visibility:
Volume is a sorting metric on major data sites. High volume pushes a token up the list where more eyes see it.
3️⃣ The illusion of demand:
Retail traders use volume as proof that "people are buying this." A token with $50M daily volume feels safe. A token with $50K feels dead. That feeling is exactly what is being sold.
4️⃣ Pump and dump setup:
Fake volume attracts real buyers. Real buyers provide real liquidity. That real liquidity is what insiders sell into.
🔰 HOW MYTRADE DID IT:
This is the part that should genuinely disturb you.
According to the DOJ, MyTrade ran a service called "Volume Support."
Clients logged into a dashboard on MyTrade's website. They selected which exchange they wanted, and typed in how much daily wash trading volume they wanted. Bots executed it automatically.
Zhou described the software as doing self-trades, A buy and a sell in the same second.
At its peak this was running millions of dollars of daily wash trades across roughly 60 different cryptocurrencies.
This was not a dark web operation. It was a product with a control panel and a customer login.
🔰 HOW THEY GOT CAUGHT:
The FBI created its own fake crypto company: NexFundAI. Real website, real Ethereum token, trading on Uniswap.
Then they went shopping for manipulation services and recorded the sales pitches.
In those conversations, Zhou explained the objective was to find other buyers from the community, people you don't know about or don't care about, because they have to lose money for the operation to profit.
That is the business model, stated plainly by the operator. Retail losses were not a side effect. They were the product.
The operation was called Token Mirrors. 18 individuals and entities were charged in October 2024, including market makers Gotbit, ZM Quant and CLS Global.
🔰 HOW TO SPOT FAKE VOLUME YOURSELF
You do not need special tools. You need these five checks:
1️⃣ Volume vs. liquidity depth:
Open the order book. If a token shows $20M daily volume but a $10K market sell moves the price 8%, that volume is not real. Real volume requires real depth.
2️⃣ Volume vs. holder count:
Huge volume with a few thousand holders is a contradiction. Real activity needs real participants.
3️⃣ Volume vs. price movement:
Genuine heavy volume moves price. If volume is massive but the chart is flat and mechanical, you are watching bots trade with themselves.
4️⃣ The candle pattern:
Wash trading often produces suspiciously even, evenly-spaced volume bars, the same size, hour after hour, including dead hours. Human markets are messy. Bots are tidy.
5️⃣ Volume with no news:
A sudden volume surge with zero announcements, zero social mentions, zero on-chain inflows is manufactured, not organic.
🔰THE UNCOMFORTABLE PART:
MyTrade was one firm. There were at least three other market makers charged in the same operation.
Which means: for years, a meaningful portion of the volume you were reading on low and mid-cap tokens was fiction. Every entry you took because "volume is strong" may have been based on a number someone paid for.
And the penalty for running that machine turned out to be $10,000.

Everyone is posting "CLARITY Act = Bull Run."
Almost nobody is asking the harder question: What happens if it fails?
As a trader, you don't get paid for hope. You get paid for preparation. So let's walk through the rejection scenario - step by step, no drama, no hype.
🔰 WHERE THE BILL ACTUALLY STANDS TODAY
▪️ Passed the House in July 2025 (294–134)
▪️ Cleared Senate Banking Committee 15–9 in May 2026
▪️ Placed on the Senate calendar but NO floor vote scheduled yet
▪️ The July 4 signing target already came and went. Missed.
The Senate returns July 13. After that, there are only about 3 working weeks before the August recess. If the bill doesn't move in that window, the calendar runs straight into midterm elections and serious legislation rarely survives election season.
Prediction markets currently price passage in 2026 at roughly 55–60%.
Read that again. The market is saying there is a 40–45% chance this does NOT happen this year. That is not a tail risk. That is almost a coin flip.
🔰 WHY IT COULD FAIL: THE 3 REAL BLOCKERS
1️⃣ The Ethics Fight:
Several Democratic senators are demanding rules covering government officials' crypto holdings before they vote yes. The White House opposes it. Neither side is blinking. Without 7+ Democrat votes, the bill mathematically cannot pass.
2️⃣ The Developer Protection Dispute (Section 604):
Law enforcement groups argue the section shielding non-custodial software developers would weaken criminal investigations. This fight is unresolved.
3️⃣ The Stablecoin Yield Battle:
Banks argue the bill creates a loophole letting crypto platforms pay interest-like rewards that banks legally cannot. Billions in revenue are at stake, and the banking lobby is fighting hard.
Any ONE of these can stall the bill. All three are still open.
🔰 IF IT FAILS: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MARKET
Phase 1: The Knee-Jerk (Days):
Expect a sharp sentiment shock. Leveraged longs built on "regulation is coming" get flushed. Crypto equities (exchanges, miners, treasury companies) likely take the hardest immediate hit because their entire 2026 re-rating story is built on US regulatory clarity.
Phase 2: The Repricing (Weeks):
This is the part most people miss. Major bank price targets, like the $143K–$150K Bitcoin calls, are CONDITIONAL on the bill passing. Remove the condition, and analysts quietly walk those targets down. Institutional money that was waiting on the sidelines for legal certainty simply keeps waiting.

🟣 Altcoins & DeFi: Back to the grey zone. Every project must again ask: "Is the SEC coming for us?" Capital rotates to jurisdictions with finished rulebooks.
