Hyperliquid bought back and burned 21,040 HYPE over the last 24 hours, roughly $1.66M at an average of $78.90 (Onchain Lens data, reported by ChainCatcher this morning). Yet $HYPE is still sitting near $77, down 12.2% over seven days. Meanwhile $BTC lost only 2.5% over the same window. So what's going on with the flagship perp DEX token?
The tape first (Binance spot, this hour)
HYPE trades at $77.27, -2.1% on the day, with a 24h range of $77.23–$79.68. In other words, it's printing near the session low. The 7-day range is $76.25–$89.08, and the 90-day low on Binance is $74.45. Spot volume is about $22M over 24h, around 40% below its 30-day daily average of ~$38M. The selling isn't loud. Buyers just aren't stepping up either.
The bigger divergence is on the 90-day view. BTC is up 18.4% over 90 days. HYPE is down 16.1%. On a 30-day view the two are almost level (HYPE -8.3%, BTC -7.4%), so most of this week's damage is HYPE-specific underperformance on top of a soft market.
Why buybacks are a brake, not an engine
Hyperliquid routes protocol revenue to its Assistance Fund, which buys HYPE on the open market. According to CryptoTicker (citing DefiLlama), protocol revenue was about $17M over the last 7 days and about $69M over 30 days. The fund holds roughly 48.7M HYPE.
That's real, steady demand. But at today's prices, a day of revenue only buys around 30–35k HYPE. When leveraged traders unwind, that flow gets swamped fast. Buybacks set a slow floor under the price over months, not an hourly bounce. Expecting the burn to "save" the chart this week misreads how the mechanism works.
The leverage angle
CryptoTicker also reported HYPE perp open interest of about $1.71B, with funding positive in every hour of the past week. Positive funding through a 12% drop means longs kept paying to stay in while price fell. That's exactly the setup that turns a support break into a cascade if $76 gives way. On the flip side, if price holds and those longs get shaken out slowly, positioning gets cleaner for the next move.
What perp DEX traders should watch
1. $76.25, this week's low. A clean 4h close below it opens the 90-day low near $74.45.
2. Volume. A bounce on spot volume back above the ~$38M daily average would mean real buyers. A bounce on thin volume is just short covering.
3. Funding. A flip to negative while price holds support would be the first sign the crowd has finally capitulated.
4. BTC. HYPE has been a high-beta follower this week. If BTC loses $74.9k (its 7-day low), don't expect HYPE to be the exception.
The bigger picture
The perp DEX thesis hasn't broken. Hyperliquid still generates meaningful revenue and recycles it into its own token, which few projects can say. But fundamentals and price run on different clocks. Right now the market is pricing leverage risk, not revenue.
HYPE is volatile and can move 10%+ in days in either direction. Size accordingly.
Are you treating $76 as a level to defend or a level to wait below?
Not financial advice.
