💥 Bitcoin Developer Proposes "Quantum Landmines" to Make Thieves Lose Their Own BTC

Prominent Bitcoin Core developer Cory Fields has proposed a conceptual project dubbed "quantum landmines" aimed at protecting vulnerable cryptocurrency wallets from future attacks by quantum computers.

The core idea rests on game theory and economic incentives: rather than relying solely on mathematical network upgrades, it proposes making the theft attempt itself financially dangerous for the hacker. Under the proposal, an attacker trying to crack and transfer funds from an old or vulnerable wallet would first have to lock up an equivalent amount as collateral—for example, posting a matching personal deposit from a quantum-secure vault.

If the attack proves to be an unauthorized theft attempt, the attacker's locked funds are burned or forfeited to the protected party. This structure makes a successful hack potentially far more expensive for thieves than the bounty itself. Additionally, the concept touches on auction mechanisms for dormant or lost legacy wallets.

Fields emphasizes that at this stage, the concept is merely a theoretical thought experiment shared on the developer mailing list. Implementing such a system would require prior adoption of quantum-resistant wallets and consensus rule changes to the Bitcoin protocol, meaning there is no working code or immediate timeline for implementation.
