What is a stablecoin, really?

A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to stay at $1.

The big names — $USDT and $USDC — hold reserves (cash and short-term government bonds) meant to back every token 1:1. You use them to park money inside crypto without riding Bitcoin's rollercoaster, to trade faster, and to send dollars across borders in minutes.

But "designed to stay at $1" is a promise, not a law of physics. The risks are real: reserve quality, regulation, and the issuer freezing addresses. In 2022 a different kind of stablecoin (an algorithmic one) collapsed to zero — billions gone.

Rule: use stablecoins as a tool, not as a savings account. Know which type you hold and who stands behind it.

Do you keep any savings in stablecoins, or only trading funds?
