I was on my phone at 1:15 a.m. when I saw the panic index hit 82

Not 62. Not 72 Eighty-two. the kind of number that usually means someone is about to get carried out.

AKE had just dropped 23.66% in 24 hours. Price sat at $0.0095 the low touched $0.0084 And the funding rate was negative 0.08% — annualized at roughly minus 365%

Shorts were paying longs to stay in a trade that was already working.

I've been on that side before. Back in 2021, I shorted a small-cap because the chart looked heavy and the funding was negative. I thought I was getting paid to be right. A single green candle took me out in three minutes. I remember refreshing the page like the number would come back. It didn't. The lesson wasn't about direction. It was about understanding what negative funding actually means when the crowd is already leaning one way.

Here's what actually happened with AKE.

the token bled through $0.0095 and touched $0.0084 before bouncing. Volume hit $142.9 million. Panic sellers dominated the tape. On the surface, it looked like a routine small-cap flush.

But the funding rate told a different story.

At minus 0.3338% per eight hours, shorts were paying longs roughly 1% per day just to hold their bearish bets. That's not a healthy downtrend. That's a crowded trade bleeding money on both sides. The shorts were right on price and still losing on carry.

And here's the part nobody's saying.

the panic index at 82 doesn't mean buy the dip. It means the crowd is maxed out on fear. Leverage on the long side has been flushed. The people who wanted out are out. What's left is a thin order book and a pile of shorts paying interest to stay in.

that's not a bottom signal. But it's a positioning signal. And positioning is what the tape actually cares about.

the same dynamic is playing out in LSK. Funding hit minus 1014% annualized after the project burned 100 million tokens — a quarter of supply — in plain sight. Shorts are paying through the nose while the float gets lighter. That's not a prediction. That's a map of where the pain is sitting.

I'm not bullish on either token. I'm not bearish either. I'm saying the people shorting a 23% drop with negative funding are late to the trade and paying for the privilege.

the level that matters for AKE is $0.0084. That's the low from the flush. If it holds, the shorts who've been paying funding for days start feeling the squeeze. Forced buying becomes fuel. If $0.0084 breaks, the next support is thin. Small-cap order books don't have depth. The same vacuum that let the price collapse can let it rip in the other direction on any real bid.

For LSK, watch the funding rate. If it starts moving back toward zero, the squeeze is already underway. If it stays at minus 1000%, the shorts are still trapped.

Liquidation cascades don't tell you direction. They tell you positioning. AKE's cascade already happened. The shorts are still paying to stay bearish. That's not a comfortable place to be.

If you've ever shorted a coin after it already crashed, did you check the funding — or did you just get angry when it squeezed?
