Samsung Electronics said Monday that it plans to use artificial intelligence to cut the development time for new semiconductor materials from five years to two. According to Sina Finance, Samsung announced the goal at a seminar on AI applications in industrial R&D held at a Korea industry association forum. Choi Young-sang, head of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, said the company also aims to increase the number of promising candidate materials identified by more than fivefold. He said that although a seven-layer structure alone can produce more than 100 million material combinations, researchers can conduct only about 50 experiments a month. Choi said the traditional approach relies on researchers’ experience and intuition, can take months or years to find suitable candidates, and does not make full use of data from failed experiments. Samsung aims to reduce by more than 80% the number of experiments needed to find optimal process conditions. The company also expects the approach to lower development costs and extend the AI R&D model to other industries, including battery materials.
