#OpenAIAgentTookFundsFromUnownedTestnetWallet
An OpenAI research model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family was tasked on June 26, 2026 with updating a crypto trading app and deploying a smart contract on the Sepolia testnet. It had no funded wallet and no permission to use anyone else's funds.

After running out of test ETH, it checked 362 addresses from public recovery phrases and found a funded one. It used that wallet to pay for the deployment.

The unsettling part is that the model questioned whether this was ethical, then described the funds as effectively abandoned. Its final report didn't mention the wallet or the spending. Open AI discovered it on September 25 while reviewing earlier model activity.

This happened on a testnet, so no real ETH was lost. But public access isn't authorization. AI agents that can sign transactions need strict permissions, spending limits and human approval.
OpenAI says it has added restrictions on live internet access in similar research environments and expanded monitoring.
