Japan's crypto reform has been law since July, and I think most people still date the retail unlock a year too early. The amendment to the FIEA and the Payment Services Act passed the upper house on 15 July 2026 and was promulgated on 23 July. The crypto provisions start on whatever date a cabinet order sets, and that's due within a year, so by 22 July 2027 at the latest... and the order hasn't been published yet.

The tax change is law too, but it's chained to that start date. The flat ~20% separate tax applies from 1 January of the year after the crypto provisions commence, which on the current timetable means January 2028, and only for tokens the government designates. $BTC looks near-certain to make that list and $ETH likely. Until then gains get taxed as miscellaneous income at up to 55% according to Nikkei, and Japanese investment trusts can't put crypto in a fund.

So the "2027" unlock everyone quotes could turn out to be a 2027 start with a 2028 tax effect, unless the cabinet order lands early. That order is what I'm watching for.
