An Ethereum researcher just asked the biggest custodians in crypto to rethink their cold storage.

📌 What happened
Per CryptoSlate and Decrypt, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake posted on X that the industry should plan for "bunker mode": a calm, gradual move of funds to addresses whose public keys have never been exposed. He pointed to OpenAI publishing 722 math results produced by an internal model as evidence that AI-driven mathematics is accelerating, and said that in the worst case the signature scheme used by bitcoin and Ethereum could break "in months, not years".

🔍 Why it matters
• When a wallet signs a transaction, its public key becomes visible on-chain. Any efficient way to derive private keys from public keys would put those wallets at risk first.
• Drake named Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex and $USDT issuer Tether as large custodians that should harden cold storage, and suggested layer-2 security councils rotate keys or add hash-based signatures.
• He framed the timeline as a worst case, not a demonstrated attack. OpenAI's release did not report any attack on cryptography.

👀 What to watch
• Whether major exchanges publish address-rotation or post-quantum plans in the coming weeks.
• The counter-argument: no classical shortcut to elliptic-curve keys is known, and Drake himself warned that rushed migrations could create more risk than they remove.

💬 Should custodians act on a worst-case conjecture, or wait for evidence?
