$XRP is an independent, native digital asset and cryptocurrency that operates on an open-source blockchain called the $XRP Ledger (XRPL). While Ripple (the company) holds a large amount of XRP and uses it in their products, they do not "own" the asset itself—$XRP exists independently on the public ledger.
