Bitcoin is back above $87K, and shorts are getting squeezed hard.
BTC has pushed into the $87K area as the rally accelerates, with hundreds of millions in crypto shorts getting liquidated across the market. Recent CoinGlass data showed roughly $648M in short liquidations over 24 hours, while Bitcoin itself accounted for a large share.
What stands out to me isn't just the price move.
It's the positioning.
When shorts start getting forced out this aggressively, those liquidations become market buys and can accelerate the move higher. That's how a recovery can turn into a squeeze very quickly.
But there's a catch.
Bitcoin's futures open interest has also been climbing, suggesting traders are already adding leverage back into the move rather than simply stepping aside.
Personally, I'd be watching whether BTC can hold above $85K after the short squeeze cools down.
If it can, the move starts looking less like forced liquidation alone and more like genuine demand.
If leverage keeps piling in while spot demand doesn't follow, though, we could simply be rebuilding the conditions for another violent flush.
$87K is impressive. Holding the breakout without immediately reloading excessive leverage is the real test.
