Gold investment demand accelerated sharply in August.

According to the World Gold Council, global physically backed gold ETFs attracted $18 billion during the month. That was the second-largest monthly inflow on record and pushed total ETF assets to $615 billion.

Gold holdings also reached a record 4,189 tonnes after rising by 121 tonnes in August. North America recorded its third-largest monthly inflow while Europe posted its strongest month ever. Together, the two regions accounted for nearly 90% of global demand.

Trading activity also picked up strongly, with average daily volumes across major gold market segments rising 21% from July.

The numbers show how quickly investor interest in gold has strengthened amid ongoing global uncertainty.
