đ„ A small US government BTC transfer exposes the fine print behind Trumpâs ânever sellâ reserve
A small Bitcoin transfer linked to assets seized from Alameda Research has highlighted an important distinction in the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve: government-controlled BTC is not automatically reserve-protected BTC.
Trumpâs March 2025 executive order says Bitcoin deposited into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve shall not be sold. However, BTC that is merely seized or still involved in forfeiture proceedings can remain subject to legal obligations, including victim restitution.
Court records tied to the Alameda case list roughly 683.7 BTC of native Bitcoin seized from Binance.US accounts. Some of those coins could eventually qualify for the reserve, while others may be used to satisfy restitution or other legal requirements. The latest transfer therefore does not prove that the US is selling reserve Bitcoin.
