I had the $DUSK page open with a half-eaten biscuit beside my phone when one line made me pause: what role would cryptography actually play in a privacy-focused Layer-1?
I almost brushed it off as “encryption stuff.” 😅
Then I realized that was probably the lazy way of looking at it.
If Dusk wants confidential smart contracts to handle financial activity, simply hiding information isn’t enough. The network still has to know that transactions follow the rules, contracts execute correctly, and nobody is quietly changing something they shouldn’t.
That’s where cryptography starts feeling less like a technical decoration and more like part of the machinery.
The interesting bit, at least to me, is the tension. Sensitive information needs to stay protected, but the network still needs enough evidence to validate what happened.
I initially assumed stronger privacy would naturally mean less visibility and therefore less security.
I think I mixed those two things up.
A system can hide the actual financial details while still using cryptographic proofs or other mechanisms to establish that certain conditions were satisfied. The details stay behind the curtain, but the network can still check the important rules.
My Wi-Fi died right when I was trying to read more about it, which was honestly annoying. 😂
Now I’m wondering about the trade-off I hadn’t considered before: how much cryptographic complexity can a financial blockchain handle before the privacy becomes expensive in performance, development, or usability?
