According to Foresight News, Fantom Foundation has announced that a new upgrade is on the horizon, with validators beginning the upgrade process this week. The forthcoming upgrade, supported by Sonic technology, is set to introduce a new Opera, aiming to enhance the network's scalability.

The most significant change in this upgrade is the introduction of a new storage system for the Opera chain. This system, based on a file-based StateDB, is designed to reduce access time. For validation nodes, this could potentially reduce storage requirements by more than 90%.

In addition to this, the upgrade also includes optimizations and fine-tuning improvements to the Lachesis consensus mechanism. This announcement marks a significant step forward in the Foundation's ongoing efforts to improve and expand its network capabilities.
