⛓️‍💥🚨⚠️ Three incidents , one week, three completely different ways for a chain to fail.
And TBH, that's the part that should worry people more than any single number does!
What happened?
1️⃣ Harmony, August 12:
Someone minted about 4 billion $ONE out of nothing. That's roughly 26% of the entire prior supply, conjured in one exploit. ONE cratered as the market figured out what just happened.
Oh, also, because of the low liquidity the hacker probably won't be able to sell all of the coins he minted. 🤷‍♀️
And this isn't even Harmony's first rodeo, their Horizon Bridge got drained for $100M back in 2022.
Two different attack surfaces, same protocol, three years apart.
The coin One ? Slided down dramatically.
2️⃣Ravencoin, August 7:
A bug let invalid blocks slip into the chain. There's no dramatic $ stolen headline here, which somehow makes it even worse.
Major mining pools are now quietly rebuilding an entire new chain from before the exploit, which means days of transactions are sitting in limbo, technically real until they suddenly aren't.
Ravencoin has been here before too. An inflation bug in 2020 conjured around 315M extra RVN. Déjà vu, basically.
The irony in this one - this chain was created from the BTC code... And that sais a lot about their intentions security - wise. I guess this Raven said his last : Nevermore...
3️⃣Coreum, August 9:
Their $XRP bridge got fed fake deposits and handed over almost 200,000 XRP, about $200K, in 97 minutes flat. Less time than it takes to watch a movie. 🍿📽️🎬
Did the price of $XRP slided down because of this exploit? I don't think so, but it might have been one of the factors pushing XRP under $1 👀👇
Here's what actually gets me: these aren't variations on the same hack.
One printed money that never should have existed.
One put the truth of the chain's own history up for debate.
One tricked a bridge into believing a lie.
👉 Minting, consensus, and trust in messaging are three completely separate layers of a system, and all three failed independently in the same week.
That's the real takeaway. Crypto has a hack problem makes it sound like one door is unlocked and you just need a better lock.
It's not one door.
The minting logic, the consensus rules, and the bridge validation are separate attack surfaces that each need to hold on their own.
👉 One bad week doesn't prove the whole industry is broken, but it's a pretty clean reminder that audited and secure are not the same word, and repeat offenders like Harmony and Ravencoin suggest some of these lessons aren't sticking the first time around.
