Starknet's L1 Research Vote, Explained 🧵
$STRK holders recently voted in a non-binding governance poll. The result: 93.5% voted in favor of researching whether Starknet should become an independent, post-quantum Layer 1.
Here's a simple breakdown.
📌 Why this came up
Most blockchains use signatures that a large enough quantum computer could one day break. No one knows when that might happen. "Post-quantum" means moving to cryptography built to resist it.
Starknet is currently an L2 on Ethereum. Its bridge and data availability depend on Ethereum, so some security upgrades can only move as fast as Ethereum's own timeline.
📅 What was decided (as of Oct 22, 2026)
• A StarkWare + Starknet Foundation working group has started the research
• A paper is expected in the coming months
• STRK stays the token, no new token
• Bridges from Ethereum stay open
• Any actual L1 move needs another community vote
🎯 Stated goal
Starknet says it is targeting full post-quantum security by 2027. That's a goal, not a guarantee.
✅ What we know
• It's research, not a launch
• Token and bridges stay the same
• The community still has the final say
❓ Open questions
• The research paper isn't out yet
• No L1 and no launch date
• Moving to an L1 would be a big architectural change
Starknet is preparing for post-quantum security. It does not claim to be quantum-safe today.
