Oil prices retreat from highs: WTI falls over 2%, Brent slips below $110 — a breather for crypto, not a reversal signal
- According to a TradingKey report on October 26, international oil prices continued to retreat: WTI fell over 2% intraday to around $100.80, while Brent slipped below the $110 mark to around $109.50, down notably from Friday’s close of $116.72.
- The main reason for the pullback: Trump said on Sunday that there would be no strike on Iran that day, while Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran to coordinate efforts to de-escalate tensions. Concerns about near-term military escalation eased, prompting some of the previously priced-in risk premium to unwind. Brent rose over 6% and WTI gained 4.4% last week, so profit-taking also amplified the decline.
- But don’t read too much into it: analysts say this is more about position adjustments than a genuine improvement in supply. The Houthis still claimed over the weekend to have attacked Saudi facilities, while Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted more missiles and drones. Meanwhile, U.S. commercial crude inventories fell by about 3.06 million barrels last week to 412.5 million barrels.
- How this affects crypto: falling oil prices ease the bearish chain of “high oil prices → persistent inflation → a more hawkish Fed.” But with the Fed’s rate decision due Tuesday to Wednesday this week and BTC having just dipped below $80,000 midday, risk reduction ahead of the decision remains the main trend. This is one less headwind, not a reversal.
My view: Short-term, $BTC is neutral. The pullback in oil prices eases one headwind, but risk-off sentiment ahead of the Fed decision still dominates.
