【Old Leek Watch】Nearly $93 million in crypto assets stolen; Tether has frozen 10 million USDT!
On October 9, the theft of assets belonging to Ledger users came to light. On-chain investigation firm Bitquery found:
🔴 Total losses: approximately $92.9 million
🔴 Wallets involved: 311
🔴 Frozen by Tether: approximately 10 million USDT
🔴 Networks involved: TRON, Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon
The incident is linked to Ledger devices sold by Southeast Asian distributor CryptoBilis. However, there is currently no evidence that Ledger hardware itself was compromised, and the investigation into how the keys were leaked is ongoing.
More importantly, Tether’s freezing of USDT in the associated addresses does not mean victims have recovered their funds. On-chain tracking also found that some funds were exchanged for other assets, and some ETH was transferred to Tornado Cash, making it harder to trace.
This incident is another reminder:
Hardware wallets are not absolutely secure; where you buy them and how you protect your recovery phrase are just as important.
USDT has an issuer-controlled freeze mechanism, so tokens in specific addresses may be restricted from being transferred.
Frozen funds have not necessarily been recovered; how much can ultimately be recovered remains under investigation.
Protecting crypto assets means guarding not only against exchange collapses, but also against wallet key leaks.$BNB $MAGIC
