Two on-chain metrics that serious cycle traders watch closely: NVT ratio and MVRV Z-Score.
NVT (Network Value to Transactions) is the on-chain equivalent of a P/E ratio. When a network’s market cap grows faster than the actual value being transacted on-chain, NVT rises — a classic sign of price running ahead of utility. Historically, extreme NVT readings have preceded major corrections. When NVT compresses, real economic activity is catching up to valuation. That’s where cycle re-entries often find the best risk/reward.
MVRV Z-Score goes a step further. It compares market cap to “realized cap” — essentially the aggregate cost basis of all coins. When market cap dramatically exceeds realized cap, unrealized profit across the network is extreme. Z-Scores above 7 have historically marked cycle tops. Z-Scores in negative territory signal capitulation zones where long-term holders are underwater.
Neither metric is a perfect timing tool in isolation. But together they filter out noise. Right now, using these frameworks to assess whether $BTC and $ETH are in accumulation, expansion, or distribution is far more rigorous than relying on price momentum alone.
$SOL also benefits from this lens as its on-chain utility matures and transaction volumes grow. On-chain data doesn’t lie — it’s what’s actually happening versus what’s being priced in.
