Databricks announced the acquisition of Row Zero, a five-year-old spreadsheet software company that competes with Microsoft Excel. According to Sina Finance, the deal is intended to help Databricks attract more nontechnical users to Genie, its chatbot launched last summer.

A source familiar with the matter said Genie’s annual recurring revenue has surpassed $100 million, referring to the total contract value over the next 12 months. Row Zero was founded by former AWS executives and says its spreadsheet software is faster and more secure than Microsoft Excel while remaining compatible with Excel.

Row Zero has raised a total of $13 million since its founding, including a $10 million seed round led by IA Ventures in May last year. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Databricks said its early customers were mainly data engineers and data scientists, and the acquisition shows the company is now targeting ordinary business users more directly. The move is expected to intensify competition with Snowflake.

Databricks said in August that its annualized revenue had topped $7 billion based on July-quarter sales data, up more than 80% year over year. In the same month, Databricks completed a $5 billion funding round led by Coatue, valuing the company at $190 billion post-money.
