According to Yonhap, HKET and Yicai, Asian equities were mixed at Wednesday's open, with Korean chip names leading gains while Hong Kong opened lower and Japan stood shut.
Tokyo's stock market was closed on Wednesday for the Autumnal Equinox Day (秋分の日) public holiday, with no cash trading.
Seoul's KOSPI opened sharply higher, adding 136.08 points, or about 1.9%, to 7,153.99, while the tech-heavy KOSDAQ rose 7.35 points to 841.73. Chip heavyweights led the advance, with Samsung Electronics up 2.80% and SK Hynix up 1.74% as of 01:37 UTC.
Hong Kong stocks opened slightly lower, with the Hang Seng Index down 22 points at 25,064 and the Hang Seng Tech Index barely changed at 4,438; the benchmark then extended losses, slipping below 25,000 to around 24,900 shortly after the open. Alibaba eased 0.9%, while Baidu and Zijin Mining bucked the trend, each rising more than 1%.
Taiwan's TAIEX opened higher, gaining 94.6 points to 47,894.77, with TSMC up NT$15 at the open as memory and AI-related names drew buying.
In mainland China, the major indexes were mixed at the open: the Shanghai Composite eased 0.02%, while the Shenzhen Component rose 0.14%, the ChiNext gained 0.37% and the STAR Composite added 0.27%. Storage and non-ferrous metals shares were active, while newly listed Kaida Heavy Industry surged more than 580% on its trading debut.
