According to CNBC, OpenAI and Anthropic on Tuesday each announced new, lower-cost artificial intelligence models as the frontier labs face competition from cheaper open-weight rivals. OpenAI added GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to its GPT-6 family and cut API prices by 50% versus GPT-5.6 promotional pricing. Sol is aimed at more complex tasks such as coding, while Luna is designed for high-volume work including information extraction and document summarization. Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5.5, the latest model in its Claude 5.5 family, and said it is a more token-efficient version that will cost about 40% less to run than Opus 5. Dianne Penn, Anthropic's head of product management, research and labs, said the company is working to make its reasoning and responses more efficient so they use fewer tokens depending on the effort setting.
