The more I look at the latest actions around this protocol, the more overwhelmed I feel by the sheer sense of contradiction. On the one hand, the official side loudly touts that TVL has surpassed 56,000 BTC—an enormous surge of capital, crossing the threshold of tens of billions of US dollars. On the other hand, when you examine the architecture of their Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBVs) and the deep integration with major custody giants, the logic feels twisted no matter how you look at it.
An idealistic approach that places asset security entirely on cryptographic primitives ultimately gives way to the realities of low liquidity and inefficiency. They claim—at least in words—to pursue decentralized self-custody, but if you look closely at their ecosystem composition, the presence of centralized custody by major institutions is becoming harder and harder to ignore. People are pouring huge amounts of assets in for native BTC yield—have they truly calculated the cost of the underlying system game theory? If this entire ecosystem relies on a handful of top nodes and institutions as endorsements, is this an extension of Bitcoin Layer 1’s security—or just another large-scale financial scheme that infinitely stretches the leverage and trust chain?
What makes me most uneasy is the integration with lending protocols like Aave V4. According to the plan, users in the future will stake BTC into Babylon to obtain certificates, and then can toss those certificates into lending pools to extract stablecoins for looping leverage. It looks like an exceptionally high capital efficiency, but there’s a hidden trap. In the very slow BTC L1 unbonding cycle, if an extreme market move triggers a liquidation cascade on the lending side, and on-chain liquidation still can’t be completed promptly due to the latency of fraud proofs, who will cover the resulting liquidity gap?
At the end of the day, the crypto market has never produced risk-free yield out of thin air. The higher you stack the cryptography “matryoshka dolls” off-chain, the harder it becomes to fully predict potential logical loopholes and edge-case failure risks. Of course, we hope Bitcoin can activate a massive DeFi ecosystem. But this kind of “security feeling” built on multiple assumptions is still nowhere near the absolute physical security of Bitcoin’s original decentralization and “code is law.”
