What is copy trading for futures?

Copy trading is a system that allows users to automatically copy the trading strategies used by professional traders. Futures contracts are agreements in which a specific asset is contracted to be bought or sold at a specific price in the future, and often leverage is used to achieve greater profits. However, the assets are not actually owned, but rather speculated on their future prices.

Legal caveats in copy trading of futures contracts

1- Gambling:

Futures trading is highly dependent on speculation and speculation which is highly risky. When you copy other people's strategies without proper understanding, trading becomes akin to gambling. Allah Almighty said:

“Intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than God], and divining arrows are but abominations from the work of Satan, so avoid them.” [Al-Ma’idah: 90]

2- Not owning assets:

In futures contracts, the value of the assets is traded without actually owning them. This contradicts the saying of the Prophet ﷺ:

“Do not sell what you do not have” (Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood).

3- Financial leverage (interest-bearing loans):

Futures contracts often rely on leverage, which is borrowing money to increase the volume of a trade. If these loans incur any interest, they fall under the category of usury, which is forbidden, as Allah Almighty says:

“Allah has permitted trade and forbidden usury” [Al-Baqarah: 275].

4- Blind copying of strategies:

Complete reliance on copying others' strategies without knowledge and awareness may lead to imitating prohibited or risky transactions.

Sharia ruling

Based on the above:

Trading copies of futures contracts is forbidden by Sharia because it involves gambling, selling what one does not own, and usurious transactions.

Copying others' strategies without understanding exposes the user to risks and illegal transactions.

in conclusion:-

We ask God to guide us to what He loves and is pleased with, to provide us with what is lawful and good, and to keep us away from what is forbidden and doubtful.

And remember the words of God Almighty

“And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out And will provide for him from where he does not expect.” [At-Talaq: 2-3]
