According to the New York Times, OpenAI executives disclosed the incident internally at a meeting in April 2023, but did not disclose it publicly because the attackers did not access information about customers or partners.
In addition, executives did not consider the incident to be a national security threat because they believed the attackers were individuals with no ties to foreign governments. They did not report the incident to the FBI or other law enforcement agencies.
The attackers reportedly accessed OpenAI’s internal messaging system and stole detailed information about the design of the company’s artificial intelligence technology from employee conversations in online forums. They did not access OpenAI’s systems that house and build artificial intelligence, nor did they access the code.
