The Celo community voted on Friday to approve the use of Optimism's OP Stack technology to migrate its existing standalone blockchain to a layer 2 network on Ethereum.

The vote, officially proposed on May 3, passed with an overwhelming 100% support, with 65 addresses representing 14.6 million CELO tokens approving the measure, with two addresses representing 20,484 CELOs who abstained.

Due to the magnitude of the decision, which amounts to a revolutionary transformation, Celo community leaders have said that the change will not happen automatically (as is usual) but only when “complete upgrade from our validator”.

Described as a “temperature test,” the vote follows the announcement last month that cLabs, the main development company behind the Celo blockchain and one of the most influential voices in the community, recommended the OP Stack last month as the primary technology choice for its new home.

The developer spent several months evaluating different customizable pods from different layer 2 pods to figure out why they might be the best fit for Celo, and the process turned into a competition. public and unusually closely watched.

Celo initially announced plans to use OP Stack last July, when it decided to become layer 2 in the Ethereum ecosystem, moving from its current layer 1 status.

But the transition became competitive when Arbitrum Orbit, ZK Stack's zkSync and Polygon CDK jumped into the fray, offering to supply technology to Celo.

Ultimately, the Celo team ended up right where they started, “The OP Stack largely provides what is needed for an L2 implementation. Minimal changes are required to support Celo's unique features,” the proposal reads. “It has been battle tested with many production lines and is compatible with other stacks, such as Polygon’s Type 1 ZK Solution.”
