Giant Bitcoin miner stops mining — not because it lost, but because AI pays more.
Fact: Core Scientific (Nasdaq: CORZ) will complete its exit from Bitcoin mining by the end of 2026 and enter 2027 as a pure-play AI colocation provider. CFO Jim Nygaard said this on the Q3 earnings call on Nov. 5, 2026 — confirmed by Cointelegraph, KuCoin, and Bitcoin Magazine. In Q3, mining contributed just $17.5 million (7.5%) of its $232.9 million in revenue, while colocation brought in $215.4 million, up nearly 60% from the previous quarter. Its mining fleet has already shrunk by ~50% since the end of 2025.
My take: This isn’t about Bitcoin dying; it’s about electricity economics: the same megawatts are more profitable when leased to AI customers (CoreWeave contract ~590 MW, AMD 530 MW). But for the network, the exit of a giant still matters — what I’m watching now: whether other publicly traded miners follow suit, and how the hash rate moves next week.
What do you think: is this the start of a trend of miners moving into AI, or is Core Scientific just the first to make the move?
This is my analysis, not financial advice — always DYOR.
