Ethereum Foundation backs Vitalik: Trust in hardware continues to collapse; supports open-source, trustworthy chips
Nov. 4 — The Ethereum Foundation spoke out publicly on its official X account yesterday, pointing out that public trust in hardware devices is rapidly collapsing. It agreed with the assessment of trust that Vitalik Buterin presented at Devcon 8 in India, calling the current situation unacceptable.
In Vitalik’s view, trust should not depend on users’ “courage to take devices apart.” Users should not have to resort to extreme measures—such as hacking their TVs or dismantling their hardware wallets—to verify whether their devices are safe and trustworthy.
The Ethereum Foundation therefore went on to say that the industry urgently needs chip solutions that are accessible to everyone, open source, and independently verifiable. The Ethereum ecosystem is also willing to embrace builders who are committed to this field.
The related post also included a short video of Vitalik’s talk, which focused on the underlying hardware trust crisis. From his remarks at the event to the Foundation’s official statement, Ethereum is seeking to move this issue from “exposing the problem” toward “building an ecosystem-wide solution.”
Do you think open, verifiable chips can truly solve the trust issues surrounding hardware wallets? Could backdoor risks at the hardware level become a long-term threat to the crypto industry?
