According to a report by River, around 49.6 million adults in the U.S. own Bitcoin, representing 18.6% of the adult population. Meanwhile, only around 28.8 million people own gold, equivalent to 10.8%. This is the first time Bitcoin has surpassed gold in the number of owners.
• Bitcoin ownership among U.S. adults rose from 14.3% to 18.6% in just about six months.
• River attributes this growth to ETFs, mobile apps, and easier access through exchanges.
• The U.S. holds around 42% of the global supply of $BTC .
• Publicly traded U.S. companies own around 1.24 million BTC, accounting for about 93% of all corporate holdings worldwide.
• The U.S. government also holds around 328,000 BTC, mostly seized in law enforcement actions.
Still, not all surveys agree. Gallup reported that only 9% of U.S. adults owned crypto in June 2026, down from 14% a year earlier. This may be due to differences in how the questions were worded and how the surveys were sampled.
With a large concentration of $BTC in the U.S., policy decisions on ETFs, accounting, or seized coins could affect the entire market.
