⚡ Solana’s TPS is about to drop sharply. This isn’t a bug.
Alpenglow activation is scheduled for today (at epoch 1064). It will replace TowerBFT with a new voting protocol called Votor.
What’s changing:
• Finality target: ~12.8 s → ~150 ms
• Validator votes move off-chain
• The SVM, transaction format, and fees remain unchanged
What you’ll probably see: about three-quarters of Solana transactions are validator votes. Once they’re off the ledger, the displayed TPS and transaction count should drop, even if actual user activity doesn’t change. This is an accounting change, not a slowdown.
What isn’t guaranteed:
• 150 ms is a design target that hasn’t yet been demonstrated under peak mainnet load
• Rotor (the block propagation upgrade) is not part of this activation
• Pure Byzantine fault tolerance drops from 1/3 to 1/5 of the stake
After the change, monitor validator participation, finalized block latency, and missed slots.
