【BTC rose 3% in 12 hours, but whale short positions still exceed longs by $500 million】
A little after 4 a.m., BTC was still looking for support at 80,684. By 3:30 p.m., it had already reached 83,158—up about 3% in less than 12 hours.
Over the weekend, plenty of posts were calling for an accelerated drop after BTC broke 80,000. So how are shorts doing now? I took a look at whale positions on Hyperliquid 👇
📊 Whale positions (Coinglass)
🔹 Total open interest: $8.136 billion
🔹 Shorts: $4.32 billion, or 53.1%
🔹 Longs: $3.815 billion, or 46.9%
🔹 Shorts are down $191 million; longs are up $220 million
Short positions exceed longs by about $500 million, yet the price is moving up. Right now, it's the shorts getting squeezed.
The most striking position: address 0x5b5d..60 opened a 5x cross-margin short on ETH at $2,322.65. ETH is now around $2,431, up 4.7%, leaving this position with an unrealized loss of $11.7675 million. With 5x leverage, every further 1% rise in ETH means roughly another 5% loss on the margin.
❓ Do more shorts automatically mean a short squeeze is coming?
Not necessarily. A high share of shorts only shows that whales are cautious overall. Whether BTC can hold above 83,000 depends on trading volume, as well as risk appetite after the U.S. stock market opens tonight. If it rallies on low volume and then falls back below 82,000, the short squeeze won't get far.
Two reminders:
1️⃣ If you're holding shorts, don't place your stop-loss just above a round-number level. Prices like 83,000 and 83,500 are especially vulnerable to being swept by a quick wick.
2️⃣ If you're looking to go long, wait for a confirmed pullback. Don't go all-in at the top of a big green candle.
My approach hasn't changed: I don't adjust my position because of a single candlestick, and I decide on my stop-loss before entering a trade.
