Opening day put on hold: Solana event in Shanghai, with 8–9 law enforcement officers at the entrance

Solana’s Accelerate China 2026 tour kicked off in Shanghai today, but the opening-day morning session was abruptly suspended. According to crypto.news (October 16), registered attendees were kept waiting outside for about 90 minutes. Some attendees said there were 8–9 law enforcement officers at the scene, at the Shanghai Shangri-La Hotel.

The organizers said the morning agenda had been delayed due to “venue logistics issues,” but gave no new time. Chinese authorities have not publicly explained why the officers were there.

◆ CZ weighs in
After hearing the news, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao publicly questioned whether Solana’s organizers truly understood China’s crypto regulatory environment. In February 2026, China had just issued an official notice reiterating restrictions on crypto-related business activities—so holding a high-profile four-city tour (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing) at this point could easily cross a line.

◆ An awkward contrast
On the same day, hokanews reported that the Solana Foundation had just opened an office at Shanghai Tower and put on a SOLANA light show across the giant facade of the Citibank Tower in Lujiazui. The office had barely opened before the event was put on hold—the surreal factor is off the charts. CZ also remarked in passing: Solana can advertise and open an office in China, while BNB Chain still hasn’t managed to do either, adding, “I hope what’s good for one player is good for the industry.”

◆ $SOL didn’t panic on the price front today
According to CoinMarketCap data for October 16 (9:00 KST), $SOL was trading at $105.41, up 1.06% over 24 hours, and climbed back above $106 intraday (Kraken hourly chart). The market wasn’t rattled by the news. But this is only the first stop on the tour; whether Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing go ahead as planned is what we’ll be watching over the next few weeks.

My take:
This looks more like a problem with the filing or communications process than a crackdown on the project itself—after all, the office and light show both went ahead. But Solana’s attempt to navigate China’s compliance requirements has been pretty clumsy, and the organizers’ understanding of policy is cause for concern.

Do you think the Hangzhou event will go ahead as planned? Pick a side: A. Yes B. Uncertain

This is my personal opinion only and does not constitute investment advice.
