The Central Bank (BCRA) opened a door that had until now remained only slightly ajar: the possibility that Argentina’s payments ecosystem could expand into cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. While this will not happen this year or next, the institution expects the issue to gain prominence during a potential second term for Javier Milei.
Now, the official did not specify whether this ban could be lifted or what other measures might be considered. But he left it as an open discussion. “In a country where the perception of vulnerability and fragility has diminished significantly compared with today, and with full economic freedom, these are issues we need to make progress on. Today, we are experiencing a level of fragility that prevents us from making much progress. But I believe there is an agenda to take up further down the road,” he added in a one-on-one conversation with Juan Ignacio de la Torre, a member of the board of Argentina’s Chamber of Payment Services and senior vice president and general manager for South Latin America at Fiserv.
