JUST IN: Google launched its AI chips into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket to test whether AI data centers could run in space.
The mission sent Google’s TPUs into low Earth orbit as part of Project Suncatcher, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
Google is testing whether its chips can survive launch forces, radiation, extreme temperatures, and cooling problems in space.
The long-term goal is to use near-constant sunlight in orbit, which Google says could generate up to 8x more solar power than Earth-based panels.
Musk says space AI data centers could happen “within 2 years, maybe 3 at the latest.”
GOOGL stock closed down 1.7% that day at $334.
