Amazon plans to sell $8 billion in NVIDIA chips—could it really just be moving assets off the balance sheet?
The Financial Times says Amazon is in talks to place roughly $8 billion worth of NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips into a special purpose vehicle (SPV), which is essentially an off-balance-sheet transaction. The chips remain deployed in more than a dozen data centers in the U.S., and Amazon would then lease them back for use. The SPV equity can be sold for up to 10%; the rest would be raised through issuing bonds. The chips don’t leave the server rooms—only the assets leave the balance sheet. For $NVDA , this is a financing benefit, not a new order. The news hasn’t materialized yet, so the bounce may be muted.
