Ravencoin (RVN) faced a major network security incident in August 2026 after a consensus flaw allowed invalid blocks to be accepted by vulnerable nodes.
The first known invalid block appeared at block height 4,487,776 on August 7, 2026. The vulnerability was related to Ravencoin’s KAWPOW block-header validation, creating a situation where attackers could produce blocks without performing the expected amount of mining work.
The incident became particularly serious because major mining pools began building a clean recovery chain that excluded the exploited branch. At the time, this created the possibility of a deep blockchain reorganization, putting several days of transactions at risk. Reports described the potential rollback as roughly three to four days, depending on how the recovery process was measured.
This incident highlights one of the most important principles of blockchain technology: consensus is essential to immutability. A transaction being recorded on a blockchain does not provide absolute protection if the underlying network is operating with a critical consensus vulnerability.
According to 2Miners' later technical account, the network recovery ultimately moved toward the clean chain, while affected blocks from the exploit period were excluded. Ravencoin subsequently released v4.8.0, incorporating the relevant KAWPOW validation fix.
