The US launches a challenge to build its first fault-tolerant quantum computer without errors

The initiative combines incentives, technical validation, and private competition to speed up a technology that is still under development.
The United States has launched a competition to accelerate the development of a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of performing relevant scientific computations.

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced the Quantum Genesis Q Prize, which includes up to USD 215 million in planned funding for private companies that achieve verifiable progress toward this goal.

The aim is to demonstrate a system with at least 100 logical qubits capable of running hundreds of millions of fault-tolerant operations and executing scientific programs. The DOE wants the machines to address highly complex problems in fields such as chemistry, materials, physics, and applied mathematics, rather than just demonstrating a large number of qubits without practical capability.

The competition will have two phases. In the first, participants can receive up to USD 1.5 million for reaching technical milestones. Projects that submit a detailed plan approved by the DOE can obtain USD 250,000 initially, while those that complete a validated prototype can access another USD 1.25 million.
