Midnight Network launched this week, marking a significant change in how the Cardano ecosystem works for users and developers.

The genesis block of the network was created on March 17 and public access was opened on March 30 after initial testing.

Midnight presents a privacy-centric blockchain that changes the way people can use Cardano. So far, most of the activity on Cardano was completely transparent, meaning that transactions and balances could be viewed publicly.

Midnight adds a new option where users can keep their sensitive information private while still using the blockchain.

How will Midnight Network change Cardano in 2026?

In simple terms, Cardano now operates on two layers. The base layer remains public and transparent. Midnight acts as a second layer where users can choose to hide details such as transaction amounts, identities, or financial activity when necessary.

This works thanks to zero-knowledge technology. Sensitive data remains on the user's device, and only a proof of the transaction is shared with the network. This allows operations to be verified without exposing personal or financial information.

For users, this practically changes the experience. It allows the use of blockchain for things like private payments, identity verification, or financial services without revealing everything publicly. At the same time, users can still choose transparency when required.

Midnight also introduces protected and unprotected assets, providing flexibility between private and public transactions. It adds selective disclosure, meaning that users or applications can share information only with specific parties, such as auditors or regulators.

The network is being launched in phases, and most applications have not yet been built. For now, Midnight represents a new infrastructure rather than immediate user activity.

The key question is whether developers and institutions will build on this layer of privacy and turn Cardano into a network that offers both transparency and confidentiality in the real world.
