Canada's largest province Ontario suspends $100 million contract with Elon Musk's SpaceX

Decision comes in response to US taxation of neighboring country

The global tariff war promoted by US President Donald Trump has sparked protests and reactions in some countries. Ontario, Canada's largest province, announced it will terminate a $100 million contract with Elon Musk's SpaceX, a member of the Trump administration, to provide high-speed internet to remote areas, as part of the province's response to US tariffs, Premier Doug Ford announced.

Ford, who is also campaigning as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in an early election, made the announcement Monday morning (3) as premier.#MarketPullback

“We will tear up the province’s contract with Starlink,” Ford wrote in a statement. “Ontario will not do business with people bent on destroying our economy.”

The deal is set to bring SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet system to 15,000 facilities in rural and northern Ontario, the Toronto Star reports.

Ford also announced that Ontario will ban all American companies from entering into provincial contracts until U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods are removed.

“Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement,” he wrote.

“US-based companies will now lose tens of billions of dollars in new revenue. They only have President Trump to blame.”

Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie has been calling for weeks for Ford to cancel the Starlink deal and said she is glad that is finally happening.
